Brief Biography
Werner Liepolt is a retired Westport public school educator who taught for forty years and has been an active member of the Westport community for decades. He is a graduate of Union College (B.A., 1966) and the University of Pennsylvania (M.A., 1968). A longtime resident of the Bridge Street neighborhood, he has a strong interest in local history, historic preservation, thoughtful planning, and environmental stewardship.
Early in his career, Werner was a playwright whose works were produced at the American Place Theatre in New York and at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s National Playwrights Conference. During a sabbatical from the Westport Public Schools, he pursued advanced graduate studies at Teachers College, Columbia University, where he also managed the college’s computer laboratory. Apple Computer subsequently selected him as an Apple Distinguished Educator, and for approximately a decade he also taught graduate courses in educational technology at Teachers College, Columbia University.
Upon retirement, Werner began a late career in art. His paintings have been exhibited in galleries and juried shows both locally and in Maine. He is also a beekeeper whose interests include pollinator health, sustainable landscape practices, flood resilience, and responsible stewardship of public spaces. He believes in collaborative, evidence-based decision-making and values preserving Westport’s historic character while planning responsibly for its future.
Werner is married to Roberta Liepolt, also retired from the Westport Public Schools. They have two children, Jordan and James.
